Located in the northern edge of the Masai Mara National Reserve, this luxurious safari camp is entirely under canvas, yet it's as comfortable (and pricey) as any 5-star hotel could be. The name is a reminiscence of Kenya's colonial days, when the campsite was exclusively reserved for the Governors and their royal guests.

Set amidst a forest along the banks of the meandering Mara river, in a spot much appreciated by crocs and hippos, Governor's Camp counts 76 beds within 36 tents, all with en-suit bathrooms with hot and cold running water and flushing toilets. Décor is classic safari-style, tents spacious and tasteful. Some are located along the riverbank, offering spectacular views of the animals that come to the river to drink, while others look towards the almost infinite plains.

Built in 1972, Governor's offers a wide range of activities, including 3 daily game drives guided by expert resident drivers, balloon safaris every morning (followed by a champagne bush breakfast), and daily walking safaris in a private concession area adjacent to the reserve. Moreover, visits to a nearby Maasai village can be arranged, as well as day fishing excursions to Lake Victoria and overnight expeditions to Mfangano Island Camp.

The camp counts an open bar and restaurant tent, where buffet breakfast and lunch are served. Bush breakfast, lunch and dinner can be organised on request. Additional services: gift shop and daily laundry at no extra cost.

Governors' Camp has been regularly voted among the best hotels in Africa and around the world by travel industry magazines (for example, Gold List Awards in 2004 and 2003 by Conde Nast Traveller Magazine).
